PFAS-Free Lip Balm: A Plain Guide to Reading the Label

PFAS ("forever chemicals") are back in the news. The EU started limiting one of them, PFHxA, in cosmetics on October 10, 2026. Here's what that means when you pick up a lip balm, explained without the scare tactics.

What PFAS are

PFAS are a big family of man-made chemicals that contain carbon-fluorine bonds. In cosmetics they're sometimes added for texture, shine or water resistance.

How to check a label

Look in the ingredient list for names that include:

  • "fluoro" (for example perfluoro..., polyfluoro...)
  • PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)
  • "fluoro" mixed with silicone names

A short ingredient list is the easiest kind to check. Good to know: researchers point out that "contains fluorine" and "contains PFAS" aren't the same thing, and that testing methods vary. Read the label, and when in doubt, ask the brand.
