Parabens.

Also known as: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben

A class of synthetic preservatives used to prevent microbial growth in cosmetics and personal care products. Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, raising concerns about endocrine disruption and links to breast cancer.

Frequency risk

Risk by usage.

How risk shifts depending on how often you use products with Parabens.

1-2x per week

Low-level exposure from a single product is within current safety margins.

Daily use

Daily use contributes to cumulative estrogenic load, especially concerning for lip products that are ingested.

2+ times daily

Multiple paraben-containing products compound endocrine disruption risk. Avoid entirely.

Health risks

What the research says.

Endocrine disruptors that mimic estrogen and may interfere with hormonal function.

Questions

Quick answers.

Are parabens really that dangerous?
While the dose from a single product may be small, parabens accumulate in the body over time. Their ability to mimic estrogen and their detection in breast tumor tissue are serious red flags, especially for products used daily.
How can I tell if a product contains parabens?
Look for any ingredient ending in '-paraben' on the label: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and isobutylparaben are the most common.
Are parabens banned in Europe?
The EU has not banned all parabens but has restricted several types. Propylparaben and butylparaben are limited to 0.14% concentration, and five parabens (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, benzylparaben, and pentylparaben) are banned entirely in EU cosmetics.
Can parabens cause breast cancer?
A 2004 study by Dr. Philippa Darbre found parabens in 99% of breast cancer tissue samples tested. While this does not prove causation, it demonstrates that parabens accumulate in breast tissue. Their estrogenic activity gives plausible biological mechanism for concern.
Do parabens affect male fertility?
Animal studies have shown that propylparaben and butylparaben can reduce sperm count and testosterone levels. A 2017 study in Environment International found that urinary paraben levels in men were associated with decreased fertility markers.
Does Numbrrrz use parabens?
No. Numbrrrz products are 100% paraben-free. Our lip balms are preserved naturally by Vitamin E (tocopherol), which doubles as a skin-nourishing antioxidant. We never use synthetic preservatives of any kind.
